Restorative Justice at a glance

What is Restorative Justice?

Restorative Justice (RJ) is a healthy alternative to the common punitive methods often seen in systems when responding to crime and other harmful behavior. RJ philosophy and practices are centered on peacekeeping, relationship building/strengthening, and restoring harm, and is done so with a balanced approach. This balanced approach ensures that all stakeholders - victims (persons harmed), offenders (persons who caused harm) and community (persons impacted by harm) – are offered the opportunity to actively participate in the conflict resolution and harm repair process.

Even though RJ has been emerging in Western culture for over 20 years, its philosophy and practices have been used by indigenous cultures for centuries. Time and time again, it has been proven that punishing a person for an unlawful act does not restore the harm caused by that act. Instead, the needs of victims are likely to go unmet and the causes of the offenders' behaviors are often not addressed. With effective implementation of restorative justice principles and practices, the causes of these unlawful acts are then dissected and used to guide the healing and transformation process. This carefully orchestrated process decreases the chances of such harmful behaviors repeating itself, and if by chance they do, it improves the way we respond to them.
